History

AutoCAD was originally designed by a team led by Dave Johnson, then a developer of Cadalyst magazine, and was designed for the Apple II and II+ computers. Autodesk’s CAD division was spun off into its own separate subsidiary, Autodesk, Inc., on October 4, 1992. In October 2001 Autodesk sold its subsidiary, Autodesk, Inc. to a private investment group, RSI.

The very first AutoCAD release was Version 1.0, which was released on December 18, 1982. Autodesk developed AutoCAD on the Apple II platform, originally for the Apple II+.[3] Autodesk’s legacy software application, Inventor, was also introduced with AutoCAD. The development environment for AutoCAD was based on the Dylan programming language. Dylan was developed by Symbolics.

Autodesk first launched the AutoCAD program for the Apple II+ on October 4, 1982, at the American Software Association’s Fall Conference in New Orleans, and the AutoCAD Pro Program for the Apple II was released on May 2, 1983. AutoCAD 1.0 contained seven basic types of commands.

The original color scheme for AutoCAD 1.0 was decided by design manager and product manager at the time, Mark Evans, and Larry A. Wallace, one of the program’s first users. The AutoCAD color scheme used in version 1.0 was the standard color palette for the Apple II, which uses shades of gray, which the designers felt would be the easiest color scheme to learn, and that would not confuse the user. The AutoCAD name came from the term “auto-cadence” and the “cad” in “auto cadence” standing for cadence, meaning “rhythm or beat”.

The rover then spent eight months driving over 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) to reach the base of Mount Sharp, the rover’s ultimate destination.

In early October, NASA posted the first image of the freshly extracted rock sample from Curiosity on its website. The scientists estimated that the sample contained about 10% water, according to Ellen Stofan, NASA’s chief scientist.

“It’s a major discovery,” Stofan told reporters in a conference call on Thursday. “This is the first time we’ve seen any water on Mars.”

The water in the sample wasn’t just surface water. “This is very, very deep water,” Stofan said.

To get at it, the rover had to drill through 660 feet (200 meters) of rock. It took a total of 7.5 hours to remove a little less than a teaspoon of material, and it was turned into powder in the process.
