This process is known as Fused Deposition Modeling, or FDM. FDM has become a very common way to 3D print, particularly to make prototypes. The University of Texas team at least began the technique in the early 1990s as a way to produce prototypes of chewing gum. At the time, chewing gum prototyping was becoming rather expensive and more and more people were using “rapid prototyping” tools such as Desktop Metal, or printing with a 3D printer. To do a prototype of a gum, you would melt plastic into a thin layer, and then place a second thin layer of the melted plastic over it. You would do this to build up a prototype. That was back in 1992.
Fast forward to 2019. We’re seeing products made with 3D printers in the tens of millions of units. Chewing gum was no longer enough of a use case for FDM. Obviously, printers have been growing smaller and faster. The process of printing is changing as well, with new techniques like jetting of ink, or extrusion of plastic by pins to feed material. All these things are changing the process of printing, but all of this happened in about the span of about 10 years.
A lot of companies have taken advantage of this speed and gotten more people using 3D printing, so the market has been growing. 3D printing has been used for prototyping, for making molds for casting parts, for making flexible robotics arms, and a lot of other things.
FDM has become so well known that it has become difficult to innovate in this space, but that’s why the USPTO has awarded this patent. The University of Texas team has taken what some of the industry has done, and the USPTO has recognized that the combination of the steps that they took is a unique combination that provides a patent.
