Methods and apparatus for shaping tires have changed very little in several decades. Instead, we have changed the rubber compounds and other components of the tire. Accordingly, as the wear life is decreased, we are forced to make still other changes in the tire.
Although improvements in rubber compound technology have led to a significant decrease in wear life, there is little reason to expect that improvements in rubber compound technology will be able to decrease wear life by another factor of 10 or even another factor of 10.sup.2.
What is needed is a tire which has a wear life that is at least an order of magnitude greater than a corresponding unshaped tire.
One reason that the wear life of a shaped tire is so short is because the last shape change was made about 15-20 minutes before the actual wear began. This is because the tire has to be shaped while it is inflated to a particular pressure. Since the tire remains inflated for a period of time after it is shaped, the tire may expand somewhat. This expansion has several consequences.
First, the surface of the tire which contacts the driving surface of the wheel may expand slightly. This is because the surface of the tire which contacts the driving surface of the wheel will expand more than the underlying tread surface. Second, the tread may in some cases force the driving surface of the wheel into the inner surface of the tire so that the tread surface is compressed against the inner surface of the tire. In either case, the hardened surfaces of the wheel and the tread which are made of steel or a similar material tend to become much less hard because the steel in the wheel and the tread tends to lose its hardness over a period of time. The steel in the wheel and tread becomes soft and the hardness of the underlying rubber compound decreases over a period of time.
For the purposes of the present invention, the word “shape” is meant to include a cut. Although there are differences in the way that the cut is made, the cut nonetheless has the effect of shaping the tire. This is because the cut has the effect of extending, flattening and/or constricting the tread of the tire.
What is needed is a tire which is less affected by the wear life decreasing effects described above.
